Check out my cover story in the new issue of Studio: Craft and Design in Canada…

Studio: Craft and Design in Canada Fall/Winter 2010

My article, “Name Dropping: Is craft still a relevant term for new makers?” looks at the place of “craft” in the Material Art & Design program at OCAD University along with current hybrid practices that blur the boundaries of art, craft and design. The article is illustrated with work by 2010 Material Art & Design graduates Jon Riosa, Ana Coutinho, Elisabeth Heidinga, Homa Esmaili, Setsuko Sanagawa, Jen Kneulman and Shana Anderson.

Slow Movement

July 7th, 2010

My current show, Slow Movement is on display at QueenSpecific on 787 Queen Street West, Toronto. June 18 – July 7, 2010.

Streetcar, 2010

Slow Movement depicts a streetcar made of lace, suspended and seen within its own web of threads. The streetcar, both an iconic Toronto symbol and a slow method of traversing the city, dictates the way the streets are used and provides us with fascinating spiderlike networks overhead. The title also alludes to the growing international movement for recognizing the importance of slow work, labour and experience in reaction to the speed of contemporary consumer culture.
